Welcome to The Silva Navigation School

Pete Hawkins, Director of the Silva Navigation SchoolWant to learn how to read a map and compass? Fed up of getting lost all the time? Want to free yourself from guidebooks and to plan your own walks?

Well, you’ve come to the right place. The Silva Navigation School offers comprehensive navigation training for people who want to learn effective map and compass skills, whatever their outdoor sport. The courses are run throughout the year and are based in the Peak District village of Tideswell.

The Silva Navigation School is run by expert navigator and author Pete Hawkins. Pete has been teaching navigation courses for over thirty years. He has written three books on the subject and numerous magazine articles over the years. The books have all become popular choices for navigators of all standards and from a variety of outdoor sports.

We follow the syllabus of the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) although we do adapt the content of course to give you as broad an experience as possible.  Pete has been involved with the NNAS Scheme since its launch in 1994. Twenty years later, Pete became a Director of the charity that runs the NNAS.

Since the 1930s, Silva, who sponsor the Silva Navigation School, have been making high quality compasses and have rightly established themselves as the leading compass brand in the world. They also make other outdoor equipment including superb head torches.
