Walking Abroad with Pete Hawkins
Over the years Pete has led many exciting walking holidays to all parts of the world, with one of the country’s leading specialist travel companies, Spencer Scott Travel Services. After a three year break, Pete is donning his foreign walking boots again and heading off for two trips this autumn.
The first is to South Africa and the Cape Peninsula, the second to Sikkim and Darjeeling in the Himalayas. The outline programmes are below, as final details are still being worked on. Please note the dates and details may change as a result.

The Best of the Cape Floral Kingdom, South Africa
1 – 12 September 2010
Embracing Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope, the Cape Peninsula penguins, whales in Walker Bay, the Cape Floral Kingdom’s flowering fynbos & Stellenbosch’s fine wines.
1 September Depart London Heathrow
2, 3 & 4 September Arrive Cape Town. Transfer to our hotel on Cape Peninsular. Gentle introductory coastal walk along the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, full day walk on Table Mountain and around the Cape Peninsula.
5, 6 & 7 September Transfer to our hotel in Hermanus overlooking Walker Bay where magnificent Southern Right Whales can be seen (June – Nov only). Walk along the Steenbras River Valley, Kleinmond Coastal Trail & Walker Bay Nature Reserve. Whale cruise in Walker Bay.
8, 9 & 10 September Transfer to our hotel in the sleepy mountain village of McGregor. Walks on Whipstock Farm, in the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve and along the Boesmanskloof Traverse. Wine estate visit and tasting. Final night in Greyton.
11 September Transfer to the Stellenbosch/Paarl wine region for a walk along the Vineyard Trail culminating with lunch and tasting on one of the wine estates. Transfer to the airport early evening.
12 September Arrive London Heathrow.
Himalayan Hikes in Darjeeling and Western Sikkim, India
1 – 14 November 2010
Discover beautiful Sikkim, a Buddhist Kingdom until 1975 nestling between Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan and in the shadow of Kanchenjunga; the world’s 3rd highest mountain, and enjoy a taste of India’s greatest hill station and tea estate landscape
1 November Depart London Heathrow
2 November Arrive Delhi. Transfer to our hotel in Delhi. Visit Gandhi’s house.
3, 4 & 5 November Fly to Bagdogra and transfer to the charming hill station town of Kurseong. Easy day walks to view points Eagles Crag, the Makaibari Tea Estate and Kunsamnamdoling Gompa (monastery).
6, 7 & 8 November Transfer to Pelling in Western Sikkim visiting the Everest and Mountain Museums at the Himalayan Mountain Institute & Tenzing Samadhi’s statue in Darjeeling. Walks in the Himalayan foothills to Darap, Pemayangtse Gompa, Rabdentse and Rani Dhunga.
9, 10 & 11 November Transfer to Yuksom lying in the shadow of Kanchenjunga. Walks include Khecheopalri Lake, the Phamrong Falls to Tsong and part of the trekking route to Bakkim.
12 November Transfer to Kalimpong.
13 November Visit Haat Bazaar before driving to Bagdogra for the flight to Delhi.
14 November Depart Delhi. Arrive London Heathrow.
